BTW, those chip fabs will be more valuable with rising prices!
Not often we see price inflation for OLD technology.... but here it is.
UMC to raise quotes for 28nm process digitimes.com Monica Chen, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES Monday 10 May 2021
United Microelectronics (UMC) plans to raise its 12-inch foundry quotes for 28nm process technology by about 13% starting July, according to industry sources.
The foundry house will raise the quotes to about US$1,800 per wafer, compared to US$1,600 in the second quarter, said the sources.
UMC will initiate another price hike starting the first quarter of 2022, with its foundry quotes for 28nm processes coming to US$2,300, the sources indicated.
UMC has declined to comment on reports about its pricing.
MediaTek, catering to strong demand, has been aggressively vying for capacity support from foundries, such as UMC, which has been raising its foundry quotes for profitability, the sources said. With MediaTek accepting all UMC's requests for price hikes, the foundry's other major fabless clients including Novatek Microelectronics and Realtek Semiconductor will be fighting for the limited availability of capacity, the sources noted.
Networking IC specialist Realtek has said that amid tight foundry capacity, the company has to put increased focus on high-margin orders for product mix improvement.
Novatek is also aware of persistent tight supply from the foundry side, which is unlikely to ease until 2023, according to the display driver IC supplier.
UMC also will raise its 8-inch foundry quotes to US$750 per wafer on average starting July, up from US$600 in the second quarter, according to sources at IC design houses. |
