Who knew that teaching math was reinforcing white supremacy?

Crazy as 50 years ago I started high school with one of my best math teachers, Mr. Lew, who taught freshman algebra and coached Cs and Ds basketball (for boys/men under 6 ft) and happened to be Chinese. I don't remember anyone making an issue of his race and the only comments were he was a great teacher and coach. His small group lecture about compounding was probably what got me to thinking about investing and starting early. My teacher in my junior year, Miss Tello for Algebra/Trig, was a surname from Spain... I felt I got great math instruction and must have missed the White Supremacy parts from these teachers...

Now Oakland is trying to get racism out of teaching math to Black and LatinX students (don't ask me why Asians seem to do even better than Whites.... one Black SF school board member accused Asians of being too white during a zoom video meeting. I think that is the same board member more interested in renaming all the schools, including Washington and Lincoln highs, to non slave owners.)

I searched to see what some of the Black SF & Oakland, CA school board members are proposing and found this equitablemath.org

No wonder our kids come out so far behind...

I went to a well integrated school in a fairly low income neighborhood where I was taught ANYONE can succeed if they are willing to put in the work and are not mentally disadvantaged... now it seems race matters.
