I think you make a case for becoming a fab, not selling.

They were the clear leader in servers (chip business they bought from us at HP back when I was there.) They got our process and product designers, including one of my neighbors at the time, in the deal. As servers became more specialized and companies like Amazon, Giggle, Crapple, etc. decided they didn't want to pay huge margins to both a chip designer company AND the fab like TSM, they brought the expertise in house then bid out the manufacturing to TSM, GF, Samsung, etc...

With the decades late but wise urgency to get this chip manufacturing business in the US and under a US company, it is a perfect opportunity for Intel to increase their fab business. They were already using external fabs to make their Altera chips... so it made sense to bring that in house.

"Everyone" thought MSFT was dead before Satya Nadella took over in 2014. Its critics said much the same stuff as you are saying now about Intel.

I used the time spent in the $20s to accumulate a good number of MSFT shares and look silly now taking profits on the way up in the newsletter rather than just holding... but I'm used to that. The good part of COVID is it FINALLY gave a big enough decline in MSFT for me to buy back some shares.... Funny but my wanting to avoid paying taxes and happy with the dividend... I did not do as much profit taking with my personal shares... sometimes you get lucky!
