And your statement is also true, about specific lives. Anyone who didn't get covid (or any other disease for which they have been vaccinated) after a vaccination, might not have gotten anyway if they had never been vaccinated. Anyone who got it and lived, might have lived anyway.

But considering the whole, rather than individuals, there is overwhelming evidence that the covid vaccine has saved lives, and even more that vaccination in general does.
