Indeed, there is a fine line between realism and cynicism. Me, I prefer not to label or pigeon-hole, if you will.
My point is that despite the inspiration and fervor of his speeches, JFK himself did not see the importance of space exploration. Had he been around after 1964 this may have changed, but that is something we will never really know. JFK's memory as a pioneer and strategist in the space program is traded on President Eisenhower's recognition of the Russians beating us to the moon, or at least a place in space and, posthumously, in LBJ's running with the ball. JFK himself did nothing for the space program and did, in fact, scuttle it.
I will grudgingly state that JFK did some very good things while in office, but this was not one of them. Please let history fall into the JFK court where it was earned.
