Good question. I've been talking to my dentist and his business manager about this.

They are dropping my current Delta Dental plan as they have not increased what they pay in ages and they are losing money unless I need a new crown.

You can usually get a good rate discount by offering to pay while you are there. Of course, with hospitals and MDs... getting a straight answer for what something will cost is like pulling teeth.

I can't get a straight answer from my dental office as I'd be happy to give them the money for the insurance directly if they would give me the guaranteed rates like I have with the Delta Dental rate sheet.

The whole wallet extraction industry in the US, aka "health care".... cough cough.... is set up on how to maximize payments from insurance companies or Medicare and not as much about giving good health results. The whole thing needs to change so we pay for "health care" and their job is to encourage us to be healthy... not to get heart attacks where they can rake up the bills.
