My AGI varies, but it generally exceeds $100,000 per year. As a result, I don't think I qualify for any ACA subsidies.

So insurance cost would be something like $22,000 fixed with a $8,000 deductible. I have to incur $30,000 of medical expenses each year before insurance is a smart idea.

I'd much rather buy (as you suggested) catastrophic insurance, and pay for the rest as I go, but the system really doesn't like that approach.

We've found a "walk in" clinic recently, so they will do all the various required tests and stuff, at fairly high fees relative to the Philippines, but much better than $30,000 per year.

The US health care system stinks for "pay as you go" candidates.
