An argument FOR catastrophic insurance:

Given where you live and the composition of your family, I'd take a good look at all the videos of "Oakland residents" attacking Asians out of the blue. A trip to the hospital for major head trauma care could drain your savings. See also random gunshot wound costs in your area.

A car accident that is not your fault or a diagnosis of cancer could do the same to your savings. One of my cousins, who is like a brother, is fighting cancer now... and a good friend's wife is fighting breast cancer and having many trips to the hospitals and ERs for side effects from the chemo...

So.. I look at it as good insurance to have even at the high cost plus the drugs for a colonoscopy are worth the price!! I told my MD that if I returned for another before 5 years... then send me to rehab! (I'm 33 years clean and sober so it was rather enjoyable to be high in a controlled environment at the direction of my insurance company.) The drugs to put me under 25 years ago for adding screws to fix a broken leg and fix a hernia were very unpleasant coming out of being under....
