Gain of Function means that you target a specific site in the genome to change the characteristic of the virus. There's nothing to do with the thousands of other sites that would have to be changed in order to create Covid, some of which may result in unintended consequences, perhaps undoing the goal of the GOF.

The GOF projects were done jointly with the UNC-CH lab. The Chinese are accusing the US of creating the viruses.

The fake accusations don't ever end, but they don't have any credibility on either side. Just saying something doesn't make it true.

And since the joint GOF project was accessible to the foundation that was funding the research, I doubt that it was destroyed. They would have access to intermediate results and would be able to track where the research was heading.
