Hi Kirk,

In 1954 and 1955 my parents bought and planted 120 acres of sandy land in Central Wisconsin.

Wisconsin offered a 50 year plan of planting red and white pine trees, along with reduced taxation (10 cents an acre for 50 years.

The state had County Foresters write up a management plan that had to adhered to. It defined optimal thinning procedures that maximized the growth of the trees (as defined by basal footage of stumpage).

The thinning process has been proven to maximize the board footage growth of the stands. The independent tribe of the Menominee Indians sued the government for forest mismanagement of their forests and won the suit. Since then, the Federal government has kept records and has proven that proper thinning techniques result in a healthy woods with more board feet of timber than random long life growth without thinning.

For tree huggers to prevent thinning of a woods and it subsequent handling of the tops that are left behind after thinning is proof of ignorance.

Additionally the ground burning of the tinder results in a much more beautiful woods allows much more recreation.

If you ever get to Texas, take time to walk through the many trails of the Sam Houston National woods. The US Forestry Service has for years ground burned the forest floor It stops the "Big Thicket" that strangles the forest floor to where it is not walkable.

There is very good technology for large parcels of the forest floor to be managed. As an example they even have ping pong ball sized propellants' that when dropped from planes ignite upon impact from the ground and slowly burn the pine needles and tinder.

It should be imperative to do these proven conservation steps to the beauty of all of California's woods. I have visited many beautiful forests in California , even the Humboldt Forrest where I ran the Avenue of the Giants marathon. The Joh Muir trail and Forrest is beyond gorgeous.

You solid thinking citizens of California need to get common sense and known procedures put in place and quit burning your homes down. While you at it DRILL BABY DRILL! <smile>
