Interesting.
In 1954 and 1955 my parents bought and planted 120 acres of sandy land in Central Wisconsin.

Wisconsin offered a 50 year plan of planting red and white pine trees, along with reduced taxation (10 cents an acre for 50 years.
So was the idea of the government to turn sandy land that wasn't useful but for a few shore birds into a forest that would provide timber and thus jobs and taxes from harvesting the lumber and building new structures without having to import wood from Canada?

Redwood trees have evolved to thrive with fire... it is one of the ways they reproduce I believe. The fires in the redwood forests very close to me last year were mostly due to the underbrush getting so hot it killed some of the more mature redwoods after lighting them on fire. I remember as a kid how cool it was to see burned redwoods that were still very healthy since most of the oxygen and water (from fog) gathering parts of the tree are way above the forest floor.

I think common sense is getting overrun by idiots who think we were born racists rather than people are herd animals and naturally stick together with similar folks. SOME of us like to add diversity so we date, marry etc. across races but I've observed here that two Asian girls I helped raise mostly hung out with other Asians but would date and have white and Asian Indian friends. They are both doctors now (one MD the other PhD) and are the new hope for the state. I think they are moderates like me but the real issue here is the far left loons ruined the Democratic party of Kennedy and younger Jerry Brown just as the far right loons ruined the GOP for many.
