Someone is the counterparty to a lot of that US debt.

The US could get away with what you are suggesting, if they remain the world's main currency. No other country could do it.

What you are suggesting would only contribute to the rapidly depreciating value of the US dollar, and all other country's currencies depreciation with reference to real hard assets.

I think the economic implications would be devastating. The world would realize that buying US debt would make their buys go to zero, which has been happening with increasing rapidity since the last two world wars.

This would work as long as the US continues to have the most military might in the world.
