Index investing works because they are weighted in such a way that the successful stocks carry more weight than the losers and the losers are eventually dropped from the indexes and replaced with successful ones from the smaller indexes. Note I am responding to myself because I'm tired of being talked down to like I'm scum. This has happened repeatedly from this person and my usual response is to wipe the floor with them if it happened in person.
