Look at the diets of most people.

Your examples are of personal decisions that people make for themselves.
That's not really where the wisdom of crowds works. It is effective when a large group has an interest in the outcome of the same thing. That is, the crowd has to make a group decision for the 'wisdom' to be in effect.

Look at 9/11. We traded our rights to privacy away without a whimper.

Now that was a group decision, but I don't recall having any input. If I had it certainly was against the Patriot act. Just like advice from your mother, the wisdom of the crowd only works if the decider is listening.
