I agree the extreme conditions are interesting as it made for a good ethical dilemma in the book. Your kids may be safe from physical abuse now... but you live in a city that has had how many innocents killed by gunfire between gangs or just plain criminals who have guns to make up for lack of brains or work ethic? npr.org They could be killed by a stray bullet or your wife beat on the head for her purse by a racist who believes Asians don't believe in banks and they are smaller in stature so they are easy targets.
