I remember a maths lessons where I was going to be evaluated while teaching to a large secondary school class. It was on fractions to unruly teenagers in Scotland. I did prepare carefully.

(1) A brief talk at beginning. Do we need to learn to count and do sums in the new age of calculators?

(1a) Get "to and from" conversations going with students, even encourage a little unruliness and jeering.

(2) Show utube movie scene as shown here.



but stop scene as as marginalised minority character, who has commited crime, is considering options. Then pick vocal character, probably white male, so ... how many shots were fired ? I had previously taken the trouble of counting them -g-

Replayed and clipped though movie scene with students, counting shots, making observations.

(3) Teach fractions.

The lesson plan worked as anticipated. Amazed how easily everyone took up fractions after initial chit chat and video,

I was scored very harshly by the monitor though. I made all sorts of mistakes seemingly. Just wasn't good enough.
