My thinking is that the knowledge of personal secretaries should be off limits in such proceedings--as is usually the case with spouses, attorneys, physicians, priests, and clergypersons.
No, I do not think Mrs. Currie should have lied and thus violate her conscience and personal belief system. But as with all of us, the truth is subjective and the product of our individual perceptions. Her safest course of action would have been to say that she was unsure and/or could not recall. And she would have, in all probability, been telling the absolute truth with such responses.
