for what it's worth, I agree with you.

my oldest brother has his biz contact/ friend in Taiwan. even now, this friend flies from Taipei to that near, off the mainland Taiwanese controlled Island (i'm thinking we called it Quemoy or Matsu yrs ago). He's off to the mainland to do business (Fujian blood is strong both sides of the border). Previously, he sold his office in Guangzhou, but the realization of good profits keeps him in the game.
(His previous business was as a paper mfg in Mexico, where the costs of labor where much lower than China. He no longer has that Mexican business. So much for Econ 101).

Now I'm thinking that XiJinping is so progressing his domestic agenda in making 'wealthy' (by leveling the 'rich') the 'common man' that there is quite a bit of money to be made in China.
So in the interim, China will do okay, but as I have previously pointed out in other postings, Chinese demographics will be self defeating.

Interesting, your mention of HongKong. I was being processed as a foreigner out of China, sometime June'20 when during my interview (interrogation) my English speaking female officer made mention of the HongKong riots at that time. She said what is wrong with those HongKong people.. they're all Chinese! I wanted to burst her Chinese balloon on the price of freedom. China has sucked the life out of HongKong. The Party lives on.
