Jemeul, I watched the robot blather on for months about Intel not being a threat to a particular chip company (S3) when it was trading in the mid-twenties. That continued all the way down and it now trades in the mid single digits. I wouldn't underestimate the ability of Microsoft, Intel and others to establish a standard and even propose a new modem standard now that the consortium is on a roll. Standards are increasingly viewed as a requirement even for mission critical systems, let alone incremental enhancements to other peoples' equipment as BT purports to offer. I just fail to see the value and I'm not alone. Dismissing everything that comes along as invalid is not helping BT's cause either.

Introduction to VoiceView

VoiceView is a communications technology that allows both voice and data communications to take place during the same telephone call. By integrating voice and data, an ordinary voice telephone call can include the exchange of data, graphics, or other digital information.

Integrated voice and data enhances what people can do during a telephone call by integrating the use of computers with person-to-person or person to voice-processing system communications. Computers add the viewing and manipulation of shared information to a normal telephone conversation.

Communications hardware implements the technology. A VoiceView-capable modem allows a user to take advantage of that technology. The modem can be part of a motherboard of a personal computer, part of an internal, PCMCIA, or external modem, or part of a multifunction card based on digital-signal-processing technology. Handheld computers, voice-response systems, screen phones, and other devices based on embedded software will also include technology and will communicate with VoiceView-capable personal computers.

Modem and voice-processing companies have already widely accepted VoiceView due to its attractive price, its ease of implementation, and its compatibility with existing data and telecommunications products. VoiceView works over a single analog telephone line or transparently across proprietary digital PBX or Key systems.
