What gets me is how can public employee unions be legal when they basically own the politicians in my state, California, where they've made some cities unlivable with the crazy pension payments diverting much needed money from schools and policing. Then they have us vote for "higher taxes to support teachers" that keeps the cycle going.
Corporate and union sponsorship of politicians should be illegal. In much of the world what goes on in the US is considered outright bribery.
Today teachers in Oakland are on strike because they are shutting down schools due to falling enrollment and poor performance.

Teachers will be protesting at Lake Merrit. They say the schools that will close are in predominantly Black and Brown neighborhoods.

OUSD says student enrollment has dropped dramatically. From a financial standpoint, it can no longer keep schools open.

One major issue is the closures could push students to public charter schools, which takes away students from traditional public schools.
Uh.... the unions have made the public schools so bad that parents in the "Black and Brown neighborhoods" do all they can to get their kids into the better performing charter schools where the teachers can get fired for poor performance.

This is the first I've read of this story mentioning Charter Schools... on TV they just present the union side.

When watching the news of this story this week I noticed the teachers were wearing clothes that looked like they slept in them... ie sweat pants, t-shirts, etc. when teaching class. Back my "my day" when my mother was a teacher while I was growing up, we all had "school clothes" to wear that were nice and the teachers dressed professionally. Crazy how much things have changed.

It is no wonder sentiment is so poor.
