If there is one truth about the Chinese, it is that they will do any and everything to save face and raise their social/personal appearance. This is extra true for Xi who has high ambitions and is facing elections.

So Xi cannot have riots, bank runs, tanks on the streets, etc. How is he going to keep the people from protesting without tanks and soldiers in the streets?

The simple answer is that he will put them to work and reopen the country.

That however leads to another face saving problem - how to back away from the zero covid policy after claiming it as his crowning achievement?

Two things are required: (1) Prep the public opinion to believe the lockdowns are no longer necessary so that his backpedalling will appear as responsible leadership to changes of the facts. He will have delivered the people from the grave danger and has fully vaccinated the population.

(2) A fall guy in the wings so that if/when they have to reimpose the lockdowns, it is not Xi who was wrong but some corrupt official that misled him.

This is the playbook. But the timing and execution is not simple.

PS Extra bonus if the fall guy could be a political rival and a rising star. That way, when blame time arrives, he can kill two birds with one stone. So watch out for some rising star advocating back to work policies.
