You have to put aside your 25%/ 75% Chinese/ Honky idiosyncrasies.
'Western world' thinking.. Borat's would- be take on China, has little to do with XiJinping's version of where he thinks China sits/ should be as one of the world's greatest super powers.

I'm thinking Nixon must be turning in his grave because of his decision to 'recognize' China.. with unofficial relations began in 1972 with trade, educational & cultural exchanges.
In 1979 formal diplomatic relations were established. I'm of the opinion that maybe Nixon had hope that China, on the doorstep of South Korea's & Japan's post WW2, was thinking 'same' with Beijing.

Actually Nixon had an excellent strategy. Things looked excellent with Zhou Enlai, the 'brains in Beijing' & later Deng Xiaoping. The China goodwill came to an end in with Tiananmen Square... only the survival of the Chinese Communist Party at all other costs is warranted. That is the China constant.
