Except unless you live in an expensive power location and/or use a lot of electricity, the payback at current costs isn't worth it for most our age.
My average electric bill is $160. I live a frugal life. I have no gas or water bill. Even though I am 100% electric, I live in a cheap rates area and installation of a solar system would be at least $30k+ I would be long dead before I broke even. That's excluding repairs, battery upkeep etc.
Until costs come down, it just isn't worth it.
