Adaptec Demonstrates Dual Channel 64-Bit Ultra2 SCSI at Technology Forum
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1998--Adaptec announced and demonstrated a 64-bit PCI Dual Channel Ultra2 SCSI ASIC at its Technology Forum last week.

The AIC-7897 supports up to 80MB/sec throughput on each independent SCSI channel and yields a maximum throughput of 160 MB/sec from a single PCI load. In addition, the AIC-7897 provides connection of up to 30 SCSI devices. The chip is currently sampling to motherboard OEMs and will be available in broader distribution in the second quarter of 1998.

The AIC-7897 extends Adaptec's broad offering of ASICs for system OEMs designing 64-bit PCI workstations addressing high-bandwidth applications such as digital content creation, MCAD, design automation, and video editing.

The additional connectivity provided by dual channel SCSI boosts PC server capability for increased transaction rates and capacity expansion. Adaptec's Ultra2 ASICs are also designed into Adaptec host adapters, RAIDport motherboard implementations, PCI RAID controllers, and external RAID bridge controllers.

''With the addition of the AIC-7897, Adaptec now has the broadest offering of Ultra2 SCSI products for OEMs,'' said Drew Hoffman, corporate vice president and general manager of Adaptec's SCSI Solutions Group. ''OEMs who are working with these products can implement both 32- and 64-bit PCI systems with single or dual channel Ultra2 SCSI as well as legacy support. No one else offers this level of flexibility.''

Additional Ultra2 ASICs from Adaptec

The AIC-7890 is a 32-bit Ultra2 SCSI single channel chip that has been in full production and is available for system OEMs. The AIC-7890 has been designed onto Adaptec's Ultra2 SCSI host adapter -- the AHA-2940U2W -- which is also available to OEMs, system integrators and VARS. Both products have been shipping since January 1998.

Adaptec has three additional Ultra2 SCSI ASICs that are sampling to OEMs now:

-- AIC-7891--64-bit PCI single channel
-- AIC-7896--32-bit PCI dual channel
-- AIC-7897--64-bit PCI SCSI dual channel
Adaptec's AIC-3860 transceiver chip (SpeedFlex) is a critical multipurpose single-ended-to-low-voltage-differential (LVD) SCSI chip. It enables Ultra2 SCSI and legacy SCSI peripherals to coexist without compromising performance, and allows for extended cable lengths. SpeedFlex functions as a companion chip to all Adaptec Ultra2 SCSI ASIC products.

The OEM evaluation kits for these ASICs include all the tools to integrate the chips onto the motherboard including sample chips, BIOS Developer Kit (BDK), and documentation. All products are supported by complete Adaptec SCSI software solutions. The 7800 Family Manager Set provides support for all major operating systems as well as robust system, peripheral, and application level compatibility.

In addition, all Adaptec's Ultra2 ASICs are designed to support important server and desktop industry initiatives including I2O, PCI Hot-Plug, Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS), PC97, PC98, and Server 98 specifications.
