VIX became useless when they allowed it to be traded directly. Ever since it has acted different than it used to.
I just watched a good discussion about it last night. They think that so many are betting it as a hedge that isn't working that it will stay low until end of year then when everyone gives up, it will spike like usual early next year.
Right now, hedge funds and regular fund managers bought it to hedge their portfolios so it's kind of like a put wall that is causing this slow bleed down vs a crash with spiking VIX.
