| | | That is not the point which I'm sure you are aware.
You need to calculate the total costs, including the higher cost to insure a Tesla with all those sensors, which I did not mention... how much to repair a dented front or rear bumper?
Just quoting how much you pay for incremental electricity compared to what it would cost for gasoline in an old car to drive the same distance ignores a lot of costs.
My RICH friends are buying EVs not to save money on gas... they are buying to be free of trips to the gas station, trips 4x a year to get oil changed if they have long commutes and most important for early adopters, they got to ride FOR FREE in the HOV/Express lanes for many years while the working stiffs had to find two passengers or drive in traffic. IF you value your time at $200/hr... then you get a lot of benefit from having that free pass in the commute lanes while the gardeners and other workers commuting in old trucks are stuck in traffic.
Some of the more reasonable liberals in Palo Alto are starting to ask the right questions, but sadly after they've already banned NG in new homes, etc...
- how much to upgrade all the old homes with 100 Amp panels to 200 Amp panels so they can have all electric appliances AND charge their cars?
- How much to upgrade the city owned utility to deliver all that extra electricity.
- Where will the city get that much extra power and will it come from NG, coal, nuke, wind, solar???
Some estimates might conclude it will DOUBLE the current cost to pay for the infrastructure.
It cracks me up that the morons in charge can't give a back of the envelope estimate of what it will cost to implement what they just voted for.
D --There seem to be two major distribution questions, which the Utilities Advisory Commission raised early this year. Are our transmission lines adequate to handle an increased load and do our transformers need to be upgraded so they can adequately carry an increased customer demand for electricity.
E -- We are looking into it.
D -- If we have upgrades, how much will that cost?
E --We are looking into it and whether we will include those numbers in our report. But we plan to get the numbers, although we don’t have any yet.
D --And when, again, will the report be ready and sent to council?
E --We are figuring out a date.
D -- Any estimations of cost?
E --We have to evaluate that and we will know after the report is completed.
D -- In the millions or billions?
E – We are evaluating that.
