You cannot deprive someone of their decency and dignity. Those qualities an individual has complete control over. One can injure a persons reputation for dignity and decency, but the US Supreme Court has ruled with great consistency that where public figures are concerned public discourse (including demeaning humor and news reporting that could be termed gossip) is valuable and central to our democracy. So "each of us" is hardly at risk, unless you are a public figure. Are you? I know I'm not.
