Jim, George, Surething, and All,
It is with great trepidation I post this URL, for I fear some of Boink's finest members may defect to this site and never be heard from again, but here goes:

Jim, Please enlighten me as to what we Californians told who to go where? If it is in regard to the new law forbidding smoking in bars, this is news to me. To my knowledge, Californians are lousy at telling the State where to go. We Californians are among the most heavily taxed on tobacco, gasoline, and just about everything else. The sales tax varies from county to county. Mine is, I believe, 8 3/4%
Other taxes are astronomical here. They figure we'll pay and pay and pay for the simple pleasure of residing in this perfect place. Well, it used to be prit near there, but not anymore.
Proposition 13 (passed in 1978, I believe) limits our property taxes to 1% of the assessed value, with all kinds of stipulations and limitations. However, state and municipal government has demonstrated infinite chicanery and has found other ways of extorting tax dollars from property owners and has, as one would expect, proven itself to be most enterprising and resourceful in this endeavor.
I'll check to see if we still have a State Department of Fabric Care, but somehow I believe that it lives on. BTW, the Federal bureaucracy had until fairly recently a tea testing bureau. I can't remember the official name, but it did just what it says it does. Fantastic!
