I agree with your last paragraph and will reiterate: disease is not caused by pharmaceutical deficiency. That's all you really need to know and act accordingly. If you're messed up, it's probably something that you're doing to yourself that can be changed to remove the source of your problems. Treating symptoms and not the root cause is very rarely the right course. Not all modern medicine is defective, just most of it, especially the medicine addressing chronic conditions.
