Decades past when I mentored young design engineers from top universities, it seemed that the top US schools had a big advantage over say schools in Singapore or Taiwan because we worked on cars as kids. That is, the engineers who grew up in densely populated neighborhoods without room for cars to work on were at a disadvantage to kids who might have worked on farm equipment or hot rods in suburban areas.

Then the smog rules made most of that illegal and things that would make cars run faster, more efficient or both were added already and controlled with electronics... so I think the young lost that edge. Then nephews and cousin kids I know did things like work on their gaming computers plus they still had vinyl and high-fidelity stereos plus robotics. My guess is gaming, hifi and robotic are also available to kids growing up in high density neighborhoods in other countries too so we are losing a big advantage.

These days it seems like you need a fast connection to the internet to teach yourself skills of value in the 2020s so kids in dense neighborhoods of Asia where the state can give them high speed internet at a very low cost are far ahead of US kids who often don't have access to high-speed internet.

I'm against subsidizing internet for the poor as it means we'll all have to pay significantly more for what is already expensive just like we do for electricity and NG in CA where "the poor" get a huge discount on price subsidized by the full price rate payers. I'd not have a problem with it if they used the internet for schoolwork, but I bet most will play video games or stream 4K video shows wasting time that should be spent on schoolwork, just as the same kids in my day getting high, skipping class and shoplifting to pass the time rather than study to get out of our low income city.
