I agree 100%. Obama tried to address this and for some reason it lost support and seemed more an afterthought.

Also, my parents were not wealthy by any means but they sure put education at the top of the list along with
  • respect for authority, ESPECIALLY ANYONE wearing a police or fire fighter uniform

Of course, it helped that my mother was a kindergarten teacher and was the major breadwinner. Both parents were in full agreement that all three of us boys get a good education and go to college. One brother dropped/flunked out and the other used his economics degree to go into wine sales (and is now very successful in Napa after starting with cold calling to sell wine by phone as a first job.) We all did well, didn't make babies out of wedlock.

Acceptance of bad behavior and blaming others for your own bad choices is also taught and if the schools in the poorer districts draw teachers from those towns to better relate to the students, it is a hard cycle to break.

BTW, my mother was fond of talking about how her class of 30 kids one year had 23 DIFFERENT languages spoken at home as the first language.
