Just to elaborate, living in a safe and prosperous society costs. One way or another you will end up paying for it. Each prisoner costs ~$60k each year in direct expenses, and another $40k in indirect expenses. There are ~160k prisoners in the US. So every year some $16B is spent on them, to say nothing of the opportunity cost of if they were productive members.

If a fraction that money can be spent to lower the number of prisoners, it is a win-win for everyone. You may not like it that you are just paying not to be robbed, but like I said, one way or another you end up paying for it. And just as the most expensive sex can be the free sex, the most expensive society is a free (as in beer) society.
