I agree. We should have a model much like Singapore where if you need state support, then you get jobs cleaning streets or making sure men and women in airport restrooms wash their hands after doing their business.

I'd say anyone on unemployment can show up 2 hrs a day at public schools and day care centers to read to kids to qualify for their benefits. Having literate parents who read to the very young is a very good predictor of future success. It is amazing how many on "disability" find a way to work under the table... take two hours plus transit time out of their day to read to kids and they have less time to work under the table and may decide it is better to accrue Social Security income to get more in retirement.
