WHITE HOUSE PREPARES FOR EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE BATTLE WITH STARR

White House lawyers are preparing to formally argue executive privilege on Thursday morning in
an effort to block prosecutors in a line of questioning directed at Bruce Lindsey, President
Clinton's closest friend, the NEW YORK TIMES is set to report in Thursday editions.
"Administration officials said Wednesday night that the issue of limits on the questioning of a
senior White House adviser arose during the first day of testimony by Lindsey," writes the
paper's John Broder.

White House officials have argued that internal conversations should be covered by executive
privilege or lawyer-client privilege.

"While he has used executive privilege as a bargaining lever to limit inquiries in the past,
Clinton has never had to take the politically unpalatable step of invoking it," reports Broder.
"Starr would be certain to challenge an assertion of privilege in court."

There are several reports into the DRUDGE REPORT that President Clinton was having a private
dinner with Lindsey late Wednesday night.

"White House believes that the concept of executive privilege includes lawyer-client privilege,
so that discussions between Clinton and Lindsey and other White House lawyers are protected by
the same confidentiality that governs other executive-branch deliberations," notes Blockbuster
Broder.
