On a recent visit to NASA they talked about the dehumidifier they use to keep the old Space Shuttle from rusting in the Houston dew. It uses a desiccant, like those little packets you find in a pill bottle or bag of jerky. That stuff soaks up humidity, then at night the device heats up slightly, opens an exhaust value and the humidity is baked out of the desiccant. Much cheaper than a heat pump.

I'm not sure if the ones you buy on Amazon recondition the desiccant jell (by heating it). If they do it lasts practically forever.
