The Casino Case

Former Clinton Deputy Attorney General Phil Heymann argues that the independent counsel investigating Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt shouldn't be allowed to investigate others involved in possible 1996 campaign funding abuses. But the rejection of an Indian gambling casino in Wisconsin may have involved other major players, including President Clinton and Vice President Gore. Anti-casino lobbyist Pat O'Connor met with Mr. Clinton, who then told aide Bruce Lindsey to meet with Mr. O'Connor "about his concerns about tribes he represents." Another anti-casino lobbyist, Tom Schneider, sat next to Mr. Clinton at a $420,000 fund-raiser he held at his home the night before the casino was hastily rejected. Mr. Schneider says he can't remember if he talked to Mr. Clinton about the casino. Yet a third lobbyist, Larry Kitto, testified that he is "sure" he spoke with Al Gore about the casino. Mr. Gore's office says he "did not remember" any such conversation. It appears as if the independent counsel will have no choice but to look at players beyond Secretary Babbitt.

Someone ( of something ) IS mess'n with these people's brains.
But the younger generation in DC does provide some reason for hope.

ON THE GO: Lewinsky-taper Linda Tripp moves from her Columbia, Md., home, where she was the target of drive-by catcalls after her address was published. Before she left, 14-year-old neighbor Ben Harris capitalized by charging camped-out media people $3 to use the family bathroom, earning $40.
