I'm shocked and I've been here for all my 67.5 years.
You know what is amazing, in CA you have to Opt Out of registering to vote when you sign up for a driver's license. Opting out means admitting you are a criminal (or mentally insane)!
I've long wondered why there is such a push to get me to register each time I renew when I've been voting since I was 18....
Now I know! You don't have to provide proof of citizenship. You automatically get a mail in ballot and you have to declare yourself a criminal on your CDL application to not get sent a ballot.
I thought most of this was right wingnut conspiracy stuff... but right from the CA website:

No. DMV will not send your information to the Secretary of State if you indicate that you are not eligible to vote.

To be eligible to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of California, 18 years old or older on Election Day, not currently serving a state or federal prison term for the conviction of a felony, and not currently found mentally incompetent to vote by a court.
State law prohibits DMV from sending information for AB 60 applicants (undocumented driver license applicants) to the Secretary of State. For other applicants, state law requires each person to declare, under penalty of perjury, that they meet all voter eligibility requirements, including citizenship.
So, if you are here illegally (thus a criminal), you have to TRUST the government won't eventually send your name in for deportation by saying you are not eligible to vote!
So, if you have already committed a federal crime to be here illegally, they want you to opt out of voting for people who will give you money and benefits by voting for them...
It really is insane!
We really need to have retina and fingerprint checking to vote and the hell with "privacy" because the crooks use "privacy" as an excuse to stuff the ballot box!
