As of 2022, exports to the US made up 16.22% of China’s total exports. I suspect, this may be declining, since, reportedly, they’ve been dramatically increasing their exports to Asia. That was done, in part, to lower t China’s dependence on the US / Western markets.
Remember that dependence - currently - works both ways. We do depend on imports from China, some of them critically. Like, medications.
I think, moving Chinese manufacturing to the US would be very desirable. It would get our manufacturing going.
About the increases in consumer prices — one of the benefits of tariffs is supposed to be the protectionist effect — which could smooth the resurgence of our domestic manufacturing. However, if such increases in price an be avoided - there would be no stimulus to domestic manufacturers.
The notion of having tariffs replace income taxes, imo, doesn’t add up. Can’t pay for our monstrous government by squeezing out a better deal from importers. |
