This is funny and also very true. We had a major issue and I called a plumber. He showed up with his crew and did a truly good job. 2 days later, I got a bill for $15k. The insurance was covering it, so there was no need for me to argue about the price. But when I went by his truck to sign the paperwork, he started discussing one of the formulas that I was deriving and on my office board. He was pulling his weight, which was impressive since I am not too shabby in what I do. So I said, this is very interesting and you are doing a good job with the math, but why do you know this? Turned out the guy had advanced degrees from eastern Europe in engineering and infotech. So your story is more true than many would expect.
