I remember when I was a kid and some well off relatives retired and started to travel after selling the land for a mortuary business they couldn't sell. They talked about meeting people who paid for their whole trips to Europe by buying a new Mercedes in Germany than driving it for a few weeks then shipping it back to the US as used... and saved the tariff or "import duty" on new German autos. We may get back to that.

Occam's Rasor: The simple solution is probably more "art of the deal" and that is for the EU, Japan and Korea to eliminate THEIR tariffs on US made autos. That could be why Ford and GM CEOs are not blasting Trump daily in the press and Musk could make more cars in the lower energy cost USA to sell in the EU and not expand his factories there.
