I used to think it was our high taxes that forced companies to leave the US, but I think another issue is they move to China (and other countries) to avoid import tariffs on US goods sold there. Really? I thought the absolute biggest driver of US manufacturing moving to China was labor cost. US factory workers were earning $20+/hour, plus benefits, with unions always fighting for more. Chinese (25+ years ago) were happy to have $30 per day jobs, six days a week, with no unions and no labor power. I thought that was the reason manufacturing left every developed country and moved to China. The Chinese are now tapped out of "cheap labor" due to their foolish one child policy (now revoked, but come on, it takes decades to grow a laborer!!), but that was the driver. What I don't get is manufacturing jobs suck. Working in a factory is brain numbing uninteresting repetitive soul crushing work. Who wants to do that? Given the choice of walking around a Walmart or a Home Depot chatting with people, stocking shelves and doing whatever is in front of you sounds way better than doing the same 58 second bumper pre-installation preparation process for 8 hours a day. I worked in Toyota City in Japan doing that for a month in about 1989. That month was plenty, don't wanna do it again.
