Holly, as I've detailed on this thread before, even the lowest level government security clearance requires a very thorough investigation into the all aspects of a person's life, past and present. My brother has worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories for over 12 years, and a few years after his employement began, his work required a govt security clearance. LLNL is almost entirely funded by the Dept of Energy. Federal agents, in the process of investigation for this first-level security clearance, flew up here to Vancouver, WA, and personally sat down with my parents to discuss my brother's childhood, his high school days, his high school friends, etc. Then they called and visited some of those high school friends. I don't know what all they asked, and I don't know what other activities a background investigation entails. But suffice to say, the Federal Govt has talked to Monica's family well prior to this current ordeal, and they knew all that can be known from the results of a security clearance background investigation.

The Pentagon has had nothing but good things to say of Monica, and have characterized her as a hard worker, putting in more hours than some would have given her relatively low salary (+30K).
