Good points. I know growing up we lived in a "relatively poor neighborhood" in one of the poorest cities in the Bay Area, Daly City, and didn't have many toys, meals out and vacations to a place we paid for rooms were extremely rare, we took sack lunches of baloney and cheese with an apple and small cookie to school for lunch, and we were happy. I flew on a jet to visit a friend whose family moved to Palm Springs after I graduated high school as a gift to myself while my mother at age 41 had never flown on a jet or airplane.

The same city now has paved over the front lawns and put housing into the first-floor garages so two or three generations can live there in homes that sell for over a million. The tree cutter told me last week it is the same for living in similar priced homes in Southeast San Jose where he said my home in Los Altos was nice because there was plentiful parking compared with his neighborhood that has become similar to Daly City so people can afford to live there.

It is possible the US benefited from winning WW II and after about 100 years, all that "fancy living" advantage will vanish and those of us the benefited from the good fortune to be born here during that time try to place blame and "fix" what can't be fixed as the rest of the world wants what we have and are willing to make more sacrifices to get it.
