The solar farm that is being shutdown was an experiment. It consists of towers which are surrounded by mirrors focused on the sun. The concentrated light is a heat source, just like a burning pile of coal but without the smoke and CO2. It's a prototype to prove the technology.

The only thing is that it is now obvious that it is the wrong technology. That's what experiments are for, to tell if the concept works or not. In this case it works, sort of, but is much more costly than just taking the mirrors out and replacing it all with photovoltaic cells. Everyone was surprised that solar panels became as cheap as they did. There is no reason to continue an experiment after it has shown the results.

You can probably buy a big mirror cheap if you can think of a use for it.
