Surething,

>> the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill should be classed as a crime
against humanity.<<

You are absolutely right. The current situation with the "homeless" is cruel to the unfortunates on the street and to the more fortunate members of society who must frequent those streets. So, why aren't our media constantly pounding away at this situation until something gets done? Why aren't we pounding away at our representatives? We have become accustomed to the status quo and have given up on changing it.

Could it be that our government is afraid of of the huge expenses which would be involved in re-establishing good mental institutions? Also the legal battles they would face with the ACLU over whether or not a person could be institutionalized against his will.

In this country, unfortunately, everything is governed by bottom line profit, which in turn causes intense competition, which itself causes, eventually, a decrease in quality of goods and services. Capitalism has produced more goods for more people than any other system. But I fear that now it may be nearing its zenith; the system can only be "tweaked" so much before it starts to crumble.
