I agree with that observation, but you should not render judgment anachronistically. Times were different. The great tragedy of her life is that she was so smart that she could have done most anything, but because of her great beauty she was able to get just about whatever she wanted carnally. Her beauty became the bane of her existence. She was not a second-rater like the recently deceased Pamela Harriman, she was an actual intellectual with real accomplishments outside of the bedroom. Clare also came to terms with her sinful past later in life, something Harriman would never do. If you haven't already, try The Women some time, one of the outstanding comedies of Hollywood's "Golden Age".
