There are plenty of good people willing to enter office and deal with those difficulties. I don't buy the fact that it keeps so many wonderful people from public office. That's another tired cliche' the media use to justify behavior which is plain wrong.

I disagree, as you know. I think a great many people who might otherwise choose public service decide against it. Even if no one ever turns up a thing on you, you KNOW they'll be trying for as long as you're in the spotlight. And it's not only you: they'll go after your family and friends, too. It must be unbelievably stressful. I'd guess that as much as one expects it, and tries to prepare, it must be shocking.
