The first debate in '84 reflected an overbriefed man. That same man easily won the second encounter. (What was very unusual is that RR debated Mondale at all, no President before who was leading had ever debated his challenger because there is little upside to be gained. RR, however, felt it was important for democracy.) The Dems tried to make that a big issue in 1984 and found out 49 states did not agree. (actually 50, Mondale's campaign manager later admitted that they sleighted the 3000 votes needed to win MN, they did not want RR to have a shutout). Still, RR won the greatest landslide ever without resorting to negative campaigning.
