Wasn't the reason Ike was pushed to team up with Dick because of Nixon's work against McCarthy? No. Nixon was the "Pumpkin Papers" guy. I have no real opinion on Alger Hiss's guilt or innocence, but the PP stuff was absurd. Nixon saw Communists under every bed (or pretended to do so, for the good it'd do him) just as McCarthy did.
