There was one instance of a Soviet general that apparently cleared Hiss, to the great acclaim of the U.S. press and then more quietly uncleared Hiss when he stated that he did not have access to all the records.

I have been told that Eastern Bloc archives have since confirmed Hiss' guilt.

Anyway, it is not the case the we need Soviet bloc confirmation, every scholar who has written on or studied the case has, to my knowledge, confirmed Hiss' guilt. That includes those who entered the debate wishing to clear Hiss.
